Our system of physical education was developed by Edwin Edelstein in consultation with occupational therapists, psychologists and educators. Information about martial arts for children in London.
The system has been extensively tested and the physical development that results from training is consistent. This is attributed to:
- The development of core muscle groups associated with gross motor coordination
- The development of identified core skills
- Our methods of communicating complex ideas in a way that young students can understand, experience and apply
The development of confidence, emotional maturity, enthusiasm and communication skills is attributed to our unique teaching methods. This methodology is based on:

Physical Objectives:
- Develop physical skill
- Build the core muscle groups
- Develop coordination
- Develop an understanding of how to exercise whole body strength
Non Physical Objectives:
- Build self esteem (which helps prevent bullying)
- Develop an intellectual understanding of how this system works as integrated structure
- Develop skill, understanding, vocabulary and social skills necessary to practice all types of other group activities
- Encourage healthy psycho- physical development
Life Skills
- Develop a positive attitude to physical exercise that will last a lifetime
- Develop communication skills
Teaching children martial arts has specific challenges. Children have:
- short attention spans
- difficulty holding lengthy instructions in their mind
- difficulty being physically still for even relatively short periods of time
Therefore every word of instruction has to be absolutely simple and clear. Every moment spent giving instructions uses up a limited reservoir of attention. The instructions for each exercise given in this document have been fine tuned for maximum economy
Particular physical attributes of children that have informed the development of the syllabus
- Children enjoy close physical contact (unlike adults)
- Children prefer being on the ground to standing (unlike adults)
- Children have different physical proportions from adults and so different aspects of physical activity is appropriate and enjoyable for them
